María Dueñas will close the Literary Evenings Series at Maestral with a sold-out presentation

Following the success of her previous novels, the writer from La Mancha will present, “Las hijas del capitán” (“The Captain’s Daughters”) at another mass event at Maestral.

The final act of the Literary Evenings at Maestral arrives at the hands of María Dueñas. The writer’s presence has aroused great expectation and the event has already sold out for the presentation of her fourth novel, “Las hijas del capitán”. As usual, Maestral has prepared a special menu for the occasion, as well as Casa Cesilia Winery, with the production of an exclusive wine by the name of “Little Spain”. The event will be held this Friday, July 6 at 9 PM at Maestral for a special night of gastronomy, wine and the best literature.

“Las hijas del capitán”, María Dueñas’ fourth novel

In this work, María Dueñas pays tribute to the women that resist when everything is going against them and pays homage to the brave souls that lived —and live— emigration adventures, often epic and almost always uncertain.

The novel takes us back to New York in 1936. The small restaurant, El Capitán,  starts out on Calle Catorce street, one of the Spanish settlements in the city at that time. The accidental death of its owner, the scatterbrain Emilio Arenas, forces his indomitable twenty-something year old daughters to take charge of the business while the courts settle the payment of a promising compensation. Beaten and harassed by the urgent need to survive, his temperamental daughters Victoria, Mona and Luz Arenas make their way through skyscrapers, fellow compatriots, adversities and lovers, determined to make their dreams reality.

Special menu and wines

For this trip back in time and across the map, the chef at Maestral has created a menu inspired by the actual adventures lived by the protagonists of the novel. The starting course is fried fish followed by “gazpachuelo” (Andalusian seafood chowder) with pompano toast.  The main course is an exquisite monk fish served with clams. And to finish off the gastronomic feast, Maestral will serve an almond cake topped with ice cream.

Casa Cesilia winery has created a special wine for the occasion by the name of “Little Spain”. A mid-tier wine made with two very traditional grape varieties to wash down the last Literary Evening before the summer season.

Literary Evenings will return on September 14 with Channel 4 News (Noticias Cuatro) journalist and presenter, Carme Chaparro, and her bestseller, “La química del odio”.
